Ice Arena Advertising: The Winter Audience Most Media Plans Miss
| Advertisers
Ask any hockey parent where they were last weekend and they'll tell you. Then they'll tell you where they're going to be next weekend.
From Nov through March the ice rink is very much a second home for a lot of families. Weeknight practices, Saturday games, tournament weekends that start before the sun's up. It's one of the most regular places a family will go all winter and most media plans completely ignore it.
## Who's actually in the building
The obvious answer is players. The better answer is everyone who came with them.
USA Hockey had over 1.1 million registered members at the halfway point of the 2025-26 season (players, coaches and volunteers). Every young player comes with a ride. Almost always a parent. Sometimes a sibling. Occasionally a grandparent who wouldn't miss it.
Then there's the rest of the rink. Adult league players on late ice. High school fans. Figure skaters. Open skate on a Sunday afternoon. Completely different people, same building, all season long.
That mix will cover a lot of ground for an advertiser in terms of the audience they're trying to reach. You've got the parents running households, the adults who are active, the teens and the local fans who just show up because the whole town does.
## Why the rink works as an ad environment
Nobody at the rink is in a rush. A practice is an hour. A tournament day is most of a day. People just wait, warm up, grab a coffee and go from stand to stand, lobby to lobby and concession to concession.
That's where indoor screens really come into their own. It's not competing against a feed or a skip button. It's full screen, no other ad in that space at all, in a room full of people who have chosen to be there.
And unlike a billboard on the drive over it gets to the same families at close range, several times a week over the course of a season.
## Brands that fit the rink
- **Family and household brands.** Groceries, quick service, insurance, banking, home services. The people making the decisions are right there. - **Health and wellness.** Sports medicine, physio, urgent care, orthopaedics. Hockey's a contact sport. Parents will remember whose name was on the screen. - **Sporting goods and the local retail.** The gear pile at home is never finished. - **Beverages and nutrition.** Particularly for the adult leagues and the brands that are built around active lifestyles, the same audience we see turn out for [gym advertising](/blog/gym-advertising-what-actually-works). - **Local businesses.** The pizza place down the road. The dealership that's the team sponsor. Community advertising is already very much in keeping with the rink.

## How to plan a rink campaign
**Plan for the season not a flight.** Hockey is basically November through March with tournaments and spring leagues after that. The value is in the repetition with the same families week after week. A two week burst is a waste in that respect. If you want the broader case for why that repetition beats a passing glance, we laid it out in [does out-of-home advertising work](/blog/does-out-of-home-advertising-work).
**Think in markets.** Rinks will cluster in markets where hockey is big. Minnesota is the obvious example and that's where Social Indoor started. Take your arenas and pair them with the gyms, the restaurants and the sports bars in the same market so you're in the same market with the same families all week long, not just on game day.
**Keep it simple.** People will be looking at your screen between drills and between periods. One message. One brand. One reason to remember you.
**Buy it the same as you would anything else.** You can buy Arenas on the Social Indoor network either directly (best for local businesses) or programmatically (ideal for agencies) via Vistar, Place Exchange, and Perion (Hivestack). If you're new to that, then our guide to [how to buy programmatic DOOH](/blog/how-to-buy-programmatic-dooh) will walk you through it.
## The bottom line
The rink is a weekly thing for loads of families. Being on the screen means you're part of the routine, you're not breaking it.
