Public Awareness Campaigns Belong Where the Community Gathers

| Industry Insights

In 1987, I co-founded a company that hung framed print ads inside bars and restaurants. People thought it was a strange idea. Most still do.

But I learned something early, and it has held up for almost forty years. If you want people to hear a message, go where they already are. Catch them when they have a minute.

That's absolutely true for a burger special. It's even more true for a message that matters.

## Awareness is a different job

Most advertising is asking for a sale. Public awareness is asking for something far harder.

Change a habit. Make the call. Get screened. Plan a ride home. Sign up to serve.

Those queries don't just appear in a scroll. They require a real moment of attention, they require repetition and they have to come from somewhere people trust.

## The room carries the message

A message about impaired driving means something in a sports bar on a Saturday night.

A recruitment message hits a different note in a gym full of people who already embrace a challenge.

A donor drive feels a lot more local in the neighbourhood restaurant than it does on a highway billboard.

These are community rooms. Regulars. Neighbours. The barman who knows your order. When a message appears in there it taps into that sense of trust.

You can't get that on a phone.

## Doing it right takes judgment

Public sector campaigns are subject to rules. They should be.

On the recent statewide campaign we started with every venue we had in the state. Then we eliminated anything where alcohol was the main event i.e. taprooms, standalone bars, private clubs.

Here's what was left:

- 310 family restaurants - 125 gyms - 118 ice arenas and sports centers - 78 golf courses and theaters

631 venues. Every one of them in policy. That's what compliance looks like when it's built in to the buy rather than checked at the end.

## What the network delivers

- 3,700+ venues in 50+ markets across 20+ states - 18,000+ displays, 5,500+ of those being digital. Print gets to the towns that a screen network would tend to bypass. - 412M+ monthly network-wide impressions, measured with Geopath-audited methodology, the same standard used across out-of-home. See [what Geopath measurement means for advertisers](/blog/what-geopath-measurement-means-for-advertisers) for how that audit actually works.

One county or every market we're in. Your call.

## How we work with agencies

There's more than one way in.

- **Direct.** Contract with us as the media owner. We own the network so you're dealing with one accountable vendor. - **As a subcontractor.** We work under your agency of record or prime contractor. - **Programmatically.** Buy the network via Vistar, Place Exchange or Perion (Hivestack) from the DSP that your team currently use. Our guide to [how to buy programmatic DOOH](/blog/how-to-buy-programmatic-dooh) walks through the workflow. - **Creative support.** We can provide the print and digital creative so a campaign can go live without the need for a separate vendor.

## The oldest idea I've got

Go where people are. Stay long enough to be remembered. Pick rooms that fit the message.

It worked in '87. It works now. For the data behind why that still holds up, see [does out-of-home advertising work](/blog/does-out-of-home-advertising-work).
